Thomas J. Moran, also known as Tom, served as the Chief Executive Officer of Mutual of America Life Insurance Company from October 1994 to March 31, 2016 and served as its President from 1992 to March 5, 2015. With his prior appointment as President and Chief Operating Officer in February 1992, Moran became the first President of Mutual of America to be appointed from within the Company. During more than three decades of service, over which he also served as COO, Tom has participated in Mutual’s growth from a small retirement association to a mutual life insurance company with over $13 billion in assets. One of his first projects after becoming President and Chief Operating Officer was to oversee the purchase and renovation of Mutual of America’s headquarters building at 320 Park Avenue in New York City. Moran is recognized for his caring leadership style. In addition to his extensive business experience, Tom is an active supporter of the social sector. Moran has been the Chairman of Mutual of America Life Insurance Company since June 2005. He is also currently the Chairman of Concern Worldwide (U.S.). Additionally, Moran serves on the Boards of Directors of the Smurfit Graduate School of Business at University College Dublin, Channel Thirteen WNET, National Committee on American Foreign Policy, and the Irish Hunger Memorial in New York City. He serves as a Trustee of Citizens Budget Commission. Moran is a member of the Irish Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Board, as well as the Boards of the Irish Chamber of Commerce in the USA, and the Ireland-US Council for Commerce and Industry, Inc. Tom has served in several insurance industry leadership positions including his past service as Chairman of the Medical Information Bureau and as the Chairman of the Life Insurance Council of New York. He has also served as an Advisory Board member to the “Observatory on Europe 2007”. Subsequent to Moran’s retirement from the Court of Directors of the Bank of Ireland, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Irish airline, Aer Lingus. Tom served as a Director of Genovese Drug Stores Inc. Moran is a former Chairman of the North American Advisory Board of the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business at University College Dublin. He served on the board of United Way of New York City. Moran has been given membership in the Alexis de Tocqueville Society of the United Way in recognition of his generous support and has been given Excalibur membership for his support of the American Cancer Society. He is also a member of the Columbus Club. Moran has written for the publication of the Leader to Leader Institute and has been quoted in Business Week on the subject of “What Leaders Owe.” He has also presented at the World Economic Forum and at the Petra Conference of Nobel Laureates. Moran also attends the Ambrosetti Conference. In recognition of his business success and his commitment to caring, Moran has been given numerous awards including the Calvary Hospital Medal of Honor, the New York City Fire Department Humanitarian Award, the Commissioner’s Award by the New York City Police Foundation, and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. For his support of the international relief agency, Concern Worldwide, Tom was recognized by the Prime Minister of Ireland who commented that “his selfless actions have improved the lives of thousands.” For his service to Ireland and his support of the Northern Ireland Peace Process, Moran has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from the National University of Ireland and was a commencement speaker at the time he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science in Economics from Queen’s University Belfast. He has also been a commencement speaker and received an Honorary Doctorate from Mount Mary College in Milwaukee and the College of Mount Saint Vincent in New York. Moran graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics.
